Laura Lynn Bryant — Case Summary
Her Name Is Laura
Laura left no goodbye. She left no trace — seemingly vanishing into thin air in America’s oldest city. What she left behind is a case full of unanswered questions and a family still waiting for someone to ask them out loud.
Laura Lynn Bryant was 44 years old at the time of her disappearance, listed as September 19, 2022 by both The Charley Project and NamUs while the SJSO has consistently referenced December 2022. She was 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighed 100 pounds, had brown hair and green eyes. By all accounts, she was well-liked with a close circle of friends and family. Beth Elrod, her sister, described her as having a “very bubbly, very shiny personality, was always just happy.”
The Disappearance
Mentioned above, the dates vary across sources complicating the case. There is a discrepancy of roughly three months. This discrepancy has of yet not been publicly addressed. She vanished sometime between September and December 2022.
Laura was living in St. Augustine, Florida at the time of her disappearance with a friend. The friend died (presently unidentified and cause of death unknown) around the time of Laura’s disappearance. Per Beth Elrod, the friend’s death — most particularly the funeral — was what triggered the family’s alarm as Laura didn’t show for the funeral.
The Investigation
It is unknown how active the case was for a period spanning two years after Laura was reported missing. The first, or at least most significant, public push came from SJSO on February 14, 2025 via a Facebook post which stated that Laura had not been heard from since December 2022 and that there was the suggestion that she may have relocated to Lake City or to another location in Florida (no source).
SJSO, acting on a tip, conducted a search for Laura’s remains on a defunct commercial property on US 1 South on February 26, 2025. The source of this information remains unconfirmed. Laura’s relatives had asserted on social media that Laura’s body was encased in pavement at 2575 US 1 South in St. Augustine. An extensive, day-long search was conducted on the property to include excavation, however, no remains or other evidence were found.
On February 27, 2025, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that it was actively assisting SJSO. A positive development, as this indicates that the Lake City lead is being investigated and not just a matter of speculation. Per a CCSO social media post, "rumors have surfaced Bryant may be a victim of foul play, but information from a reputable business owner suggests she may be in Lake City.”
This disclosure is significant — foul play is a theory. But, there seems to remain at least a modicum of optimism that Laura may in fact be alive.
As with other sources above, the “reputable” business owner has not been named.
Action News Jax spoke with Laura’s family on March 19, 2025. “She was living with a friend of ours, but he passed away,” said Elrod. “And that’s the first time I knew there was something wrong, when she didn’t show up to his funeral.”
This piece also reiterated that law enforcement still had reason to believe that Laura could be in Lake City.
Key Facts and Investigative Gaps
Laura was last seen by her boyfriend (per family but not confirmed with law enforcement) but there are no public details with respect to his identity, his status in the investigation, and whether or not he has cooperated with law enforcement. In missing persons cases, particularly women, the last known person to see the victim is always the starting point.
When did the roommate die exactly? Identity? Cause of death? The timing of the death and Laura’s disappearance is at least slightly suspicious.
The three-month time gap needs to be addressed with respect to the timing of Laura’s vanishing. Why was there a two-year lag between the date reporting missing and an (apparent at least) public push? Did authorities have information at the time not disclosed to the public? Was it being worked or did it quickly turn cold? In the case of a woman escaping domestic abuse or any other threatening situation, law enforcement would not be keen on sharing information that could harm the victim. Was something akin to this at play?
Who was/were the source(s) identifying the possible location of Laura’s remains? How did they come about this information? From where did the “rumors” shared on social media originate? Law enforcement agencies are not quick to act on mere rumors so why did SJSO take action on this? A body “encased in pavement” at a particular location must have come, seemingly at least, from a semi-credible to credible source. There was a dig and, further, a K9 cadaver team dispatched. The claim was taken seriously.
As for the above property itself located at 2555 and 2575 US 1 South, it sits on 2.23 acres of land, 300 feet of which is fronted on US1. It is a large commercial parcel with two old structures built between 1959 and 1980, one of which is a full-service restaurant (currently under contract). The property was listed for sale and was being actively marketed as early as March 2025 around the time of the search. Was there, in fact, recent paving completed at the site?
CCSO used “rumor” with regard to foul play (and emphasized the good repute) of a Lake City business owner with respect to Laura being alive and in Lake City. This works to minimize the foul play theory.
No person of interest ever publicly named.
Victimology — What was Laura’s employment history, her daily routine, her social network (beyond her immediate family), her relationship history, the nature of her living arrangement with the deceased roommate, did she have any prior contact with law enforcement? Had she ever disappeared before voluntarily? Was there a history of substance abuse? Was she involved with anything or anyone that could have raised her risk of exposure? Such foundational information is required to assess whether or not her disappearance was targeted, opportunistic, or self-imposed.
The Work That Remains
Laura’s case is still active per SJSO. Florida Unsolved will continue to track it. The public record needs to account for:
Who was the last person to see Laura, and what does he know?
Who was the roommate and when exactly did the roommate die, and has that death been examined in the context of Laura's disappearance?
What accounts for the three-month discrepancy in the reported dates?
Has the Lake City lead produced anything beyond the initial tip?
Were building permits pulled at 2575 US 1 South in the months surrounding Laura's disappearance?
What was Laura’s story? The victim is always defined by much more than what befell them.
